Arrochar is also the home of the clan MacFarlane; in the eighteenth century most of the inhabitants were MacFarlanes. They got their name after a brave young grandson of Duncan of Arrochar, named Bartholomew, or in Gaelic Partholan. This brave youth mustered the men of the place and prepared to oppose a Norse raider called Haco who had come down from the western isles to dispute their ownership with the Scottish King and a bitter battle was fought at Ballyhennan. The Norsemen were beaten, chiefly to the inspiring heroism of the young Bartholomew, and such was the admiration of the Arrochar men for the bravery of their young leader that they ever after called themselves “MacPharlain” – the Children of Bartholomew. |
